On June 19, 2010 I completed my retina fellowship from University of California, Irvine. Here I am with both my mentors. Both were great teachers in different areas. From Dr. Kuppermann, I learnt the art of practice of medicine. He tutored me how to apply data from the fundamental, translational research and clinical trials to human patients. On the other hand, Dr. Kenney patiently labored with me to train me to be a rational, clear-thinking scientist. She introduced me into the fascinating world of tissue culture and cellular and molecular biology. She taught me the art of writing and publishing scientific papers in top scientific peer-reviewed journals. It was my greatest honor to have met them and worked with them for two-wonderful years in the sunshine state of California.

Dr. Kenney has been a mentor and a source of great motivation for my entire two years at UCI. Working with her is a source of great pleasure. My working with her has led to the publication of three papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Three more are in the pipeline.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta and myself once again find ourselves co-operating in this scientific venture. Even though we are clinicians and surgeons, we fully realize the importance of science and research in our career. Science is the best tool ever devised for understanding how the world works (not only eye)

Dr. Jayaprakash Patil MD-Phaco Training

Dr. Jayaprakash Patil, who is currently a junior consultant at the Lancaster Hospital, England is a state gold medalist in ophthalmology for the year 2004 and has at least 10 publications in peer reviewed journals of America including the prestigious IOVS. He had done clinical fellowship at University of California, Irvine in medical retina under Dr. B.D. Kuppermann and has worked with Dr. Ron Kurtz, inventor of ALL-LASER (Intralase) LASIK. He later went on to do fundamental research at Summa Health System, Akron, Ohio where he was engaged in fundamental research in glaucoma. Even during his Christmas vacations of December 2009, instead of spending it on vicarious pleasures, he came down to Anjali Eye Center for phaco training. Such is the dedication of this man towards his profession and to his patients. He was extremely happy and content with the surgical exposure in a span of such a short time and so short a notice. Both the surgeons, Navin Gupta and Sanjay Gupta were present at the AAO 2009 at San Francisco which is probably the greatest show on earth as far as ophthalmology is concerned .

The purpose of attending this gala ophthalmic show was to:

1. Update with the latest in ophthalmlogy both in terms of scientific updates and techonogical instrumentation advancements.

2. To meet with the ophthalmologists from around the world and to share their experiences

3. To promote our phaco traning center to the young budding surgeons from all around the world (I have realized that sometimes even the most famous institutions often impart very little surgical experience to the residents and fellows)

We try to offer the very best ….whether its giving hands-on training, hospitality or treatment.
We strive to offer full satisfaction to our trainees and patients. Our trainees feel extremely content with our personal touch.
The trainee from Afghanisthan is observing the surgery at close quarters plus he watches the magnified view of the microscope on the video monitor on the wall.
Of course, we spend a lot of time and money on maintainance of all our equipments.

The trainee here now is getting a free hand with a trained nurse at his disposal

This young surgeon from Afghaisthan is extremely pleased and satisfied with our training and the hospitality.
He intends to set up phaco unit in his native place.

Opening Up of staying Facility for Trainees

In our quest for excellence, this was another great landmark. The opening up of a accommodation facility for our international trainees. We found that our trainees had to spend a lot of time traveling from their hotel to the hospital.
In June 2009, we opened a fully-furnished room for our trainees.

At the same time, this additional facility would give the trainees more time to mix with the hospital staff and see first hand how things are done. We would like our visiting trainees to observe not only surgeries, but the entire logistics of preparing and clean-up of a high-volume operating room.

And of course, this would also cut down hotel expenses.

SEE Camp April 2009 Dr. Navin and Dr. Sanjay Gupta

Under the auspices of SEE, Dr. Navin Gupta flew in from USA to conduct an eye camp with Dr. Sanjay Gupta at Anjali Eye Center, Howrah where 100 cataract surgeries and 2 pterygium excisons were performed over 5 days from April 6 to April 10.
Of these, 67 were phacoemulsifications and 33 were SICS.
This was done in one operating room one two tables.

Report and Evaluation:
The host surgeon’s set up at Anjali Eye Center is fully geared for high-volume cataract surgeries under excellent conditions.

SEE Eye Camp with Dr. Schneider

Dr. Mark Schneider with patients at the Anjali Eye Centre.

Dr. Mark Schneider and his assistant Miss Kimberley Burgess attended a surgical camp organised by Dr. Sanjay Gupta from Feb 16 to Feb 19, 2009.
Dr. Schneider brought surgical disposables from SEE along with him.
68 cases were operated during this period (and more after they left) with very good results.
Dr. Schneider and Miss Kimberley were deeply impressed with the efficient work at Anjali Eye Center and the working style of Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
Dr. Schneider promised that he would give his recommendation to SEE to make Anjali Eye Center an official SICS training center.

Since its inception, about 10,000 cases have been performed at Anjali Eye Center. Currently, on an average 8 to 10 camps are performed each month. Around 300 surgeries are performed each month, of which 60% is SICS and 40% are phacos. The results are profoundly good.

Rishikesh Haridwar Mussorie Camp

We as a group of doctors of different specialities had organised a camp to villages of Northern India where health care is very primitive and unaccesable.

Included in the team were two ophthalmologists, Dr. Mustaffa Parekh and myself.
We left on Feb 2 and came back on Feb 8, 2007.
We carried out 50 cataract surgeries under very tough conditions.
